When she moved in we were too young to go to pubs but a few years later after we had moved, we would get off at Plaistow, on the way to football, and then walk having called in at Nan's, taking a sherbet or two along the way

Definitely The Libra by the sound of it. I remember that there were other roads there with one being Greenwood I think. They knocked down all the old houses and put tye new houses there. They found an old WW2 bomb during the works and had a controlled explosion. It was a bloody Big Bang to a young kid.

Is the Red House still going? Noticed it was shut for building works last time I passed but wasn't sure if that was a permanent closure or just a renovation.

Had some great post-match times in that place.

Nan moved into a new flat in Beardsfield, which was off Valletta, coming from our gaffe we came over the elevated section with the station on your left, then did a right across a green, and round the back to Nan's

The pub I refer to was virtually a continuation of that diagonal walk and about 5 minutes from the flat, on a junction, Dad drove past it heading back to East Ham

Fuck knows and I am going back years, bloody Hell that's frightening, she moved in there when we were kids but went in as a new build, first occupant

I was born in Compton Street which was off Valletta Grove.
Sadly Compton Street no longer exists.
So the old man didn't have far to stagger home.

It depends which way you went when you came out of the station. The Libra was on the corner of Libra Road and Stratford Road. To get to it from the station you would have crossed the road and gone down the steps opposite the station, walked up Valetta Grove and turned right onto Stratford Road. The pub would have been in your right hand side on the corner of the next turning. Alternatively it could have been The Lord Ragland (sp?) which you was at the bottom of the hill on the left hand side if you’d turned right out of the station. Both pubs are long gone unfortunately.

I was born in Plaistow can just about remember my old dad singing in the Libra Arms Stratford Road on a Sunday lunchtime and getting his beer for free.
I was outside with a 1d bag of crisps and a glass of lemonade.

Not sure where I got the Beaconsfield from? Obviously stuck in the recesses
Thinking on and by recounting the route I reckon it was the Libra, found it on lost pubs, but the name does not ring a bell - mind you, I am going back too many years for comfort!

I think the boundary went up Hermit Road then branched off along Star Lane to Barking Road so everything from Star Lane up was Plaistow, Helliar’s printing (where the old programmes were printed) was probably the first address in Plaistow, and everything down was Canning Town starting with The Alex.

Does anyone remember The Telegraph at the back of Church St?
There was a huge incident in the mid eighties where the landlord ended up getting murdered.
Used to live behind it and it was probably the final straw before my parents moved us out of the area..

For some reason I always thought the Abbey Arms and the Red House were in Canning Town...........then again I could never understand why the Boleyn Ground (or Upton Park whichever you prefer) had an E13 Post Code when it was actually in E6

The Beac was much further from Plaistow station. Right by the entrance to East London cemetery where HERMIT Rd meets Grange Rd.

There were/are a few pubs by Plaistow station.

Yep, sorry about that diversion, really not sure how it came to be, but like a conversation down the pub, the subject matter can take all manner of tangents
Any way, back to the hostelries .....

My Nan moved from Blanche St across to Beardsfield, by Plaistow station, there was a pub around the corner, would that have been the Beaconsfield? Proper old pub that and whilst 'traditional' was always good for a light ale and friendly enough

Cheers lads, always fed the buggers but without too much knowledge, in Spring I got really into it and downloaded a birdsong app to identify the various chorus
Suddenly and randomly it was throwing up a ring-necked parakeet, yet I never saw one and I am a tad north for them albeit, they have been seen
The rat bastard starling squawk meisters, had swarms of multiple broods
Begs the question mind, where did they hear the bloody parrot

Had Starlings breeding in Spring (they do brillaint impressions - there was one at my old office that did all sorts: wren, tawny owl, wagtail, blackbird and reversing truck!) but they buggered off a couple of months ago.

In my garden they will do a mean pheasant roost noise when they are in the mood.

There is a very noisy bird here that I can't place so have been trawling youtube for hints (it was none of those, it kind of sounds like a ring-necked parakeet but isn't). Heard a bunch of pheasants arguing last night which was a surpise given their general stupidity, unsuitablility for our winters and propensity for getting shot and run over. Good luck to them.
